The Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo has proposed a budget of N2.6 billion for the 2014 fiscal year, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The Chairman of the council, Mr Joseph Akerejola, made the assertion while presenting the 2014 budget proposal before the council’s legislative arm on Monday.
NAN also reports that the 2014 budget is N3 million less than the 2013 budget which was N2.9 billion.
A breakdown of the budget christened “Budget of Transformation”, showed that Capital Expenditure was allocated N1.5 billion, while Recurrent Expenditure got N1.1 billion.
According to Akerejola, the 2014 budget is capital oriented and designed to ensure the needed development of rural populace through provision of necessary amenities that would bring succour to them.
“The overall policy thrust of this administration is to ensure rapid development in our communities and to restore hope and happiness to our people.
“The aim is to meet the mandate of the people and focus towards the transformation of the local government,’’ he said.
He said the major highlights of the budget included the provision of electricity, agricultural inputs, water, health and infrastructure development and prompt payment of salaries and pensions.
The council chairman said the focus of the budget was how to boost the council’s internally-generated revenue.
He also said the council in 2013 recorded great achievements by completing 39 development projects.
“In the 2014 fiscal year, we shall continue to improve and sustain this developmental stride by extending same gestures to areas that have yet to benefit,’’ he said.
Also speaking, the Acting Leader of the House, Mr Gbenga Dania, said the councillors were prepared to do the needful by ensuring improved living standard for the indigenes of the area.
Dania also commended the chairman for his achievements in his first year in office and promised that the council’s legislative arm would ensure quick consideration and passage of the 2014 appropriation bill. (NAN)
