The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, in a tribute e-mailed to SUNDAY PUNCH in Abuja said she will be remembered for her legacies.
He said, “It is with great shock but with total submission to the will of God that I received the sad news of the death of Prof. Dora Akunyili. She was a woman who loved Nigeria deeply and dedicated her entire life up till the very last minute to the service of this great nation.
“Nigeria has lost a great patriot and woman of great virtue. At NAFDAC, she left indelible footprint and rich legacy of meritorious and selfless service that must be sustained.
“Even as we mourn her untimely demise, we celebrate her life and pray that Almighty God will grant her soul eternal rest in peace and also grant the family and her loved ones the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”
In its reaction, the Christian Association of Nigeria commiserated with the family of Akunyili on the demise of former Information Minister.
The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, in a statement in Abuja described the death of Akunyili as “a great loss not only to her family but to the entire nation and humanity at large, given her track record in public service.”
He said, “On behalf of the entire Christian community in Nigeria, I condole with the Akunyili family over the demise of one of Nigeria’s finest public officers.
“It is with shock that I receive the news of the demise of Prof Dora Akunyili, a woman who stood for the peace and unity of Nigeria at all times and fought for the interest of the less-privileged in the society. CAN mourns with the family of the deceased, her friends and relations and the entire people of Nigeria.”
According to him, Akunyili would be most remembered for her stand against the sale and distribution of fake drugs and unwholesome products in the country.

In his reaction, the immediate-past President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, described Akunyili’s death as a great loss to Nigeria.
He said, “It is certainly a great loss to Nigeria. I personally feel extremely pained at her loss, particularly having had the opportunity to work closely with her.
