In what looked like one of the episodes in the Hollywood movies transpired in Owerri, Imo State capital, when two cult groups clashed, resulting in the death of at least 15 members of both cults.
LEADERSHIP gathered from a witness that a member of the Black Axe confraternity was earlier gunned down by their rival cult gang, the Buccaneers, at the early hours of the same day at the popular Eke Onuwa market.
According to the witness, the deceased’s members retaliated and succeeded in killing one of their rivals who had just dedicated his newborn at church a week before the incident at an area known as Umuoyima, also in Owerri.
The back and forth retaliation between the two rival groups, according to the witness, continued till the death toll rose to 15.
Another resident of Owerri, who pleaded anonymity, narrated that they were forced to lock their shops when they heard gunfire by the cult groups.
“It was about 7:45 am when I opened my shop; I was sweeping when I heard gunshots and later I saw some of them carrying dangerous weapons like axes; they were about 40 in number,” said the witness.
