Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala, says the monthly allocation to some Nigerian states from the federal government surpasses the annual budgets of some neighbouring countries like Gambia, Benin and Liberia.
Okonjo-Iweala who delivered the 12th Convocation lecture of the Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, spoke on the topic: Transforming Nigeria’s Economy: Opportunities and Challenges.
According to the finance minister, the money at the disposal of some states, especially those that fall within the category of the 10 highest receiving states, actually surpass annual allocations of some West African countries. She said it is unfortunate that many Nigerians always monitor federal government activities while failing to ask how their respective state and local governments have been utilising allocations from the federal government.
“We all know that the federal government cannot do it alone. That is why we are reaching out to those in the private sector. But beyond that, we should also ask the states governments what their roles are. We are aware that issues such as education, health, road constructions are on the concurrent list which made them the priority of both the states and federal government.”
