Mimiko Tasks Journalists On Constructive Criticism!!!
Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko has advised media practitioners to be more constructive in their criticisms and should work toward nation building.
Mimiko made the call on Sunday in Akure in an address to mark this year’s World Communication Day.
Mimiko, who was represented by the state Information Commissioner, Mr Kayode Akinmade, said Nigeria was currently facing series of challenges that required public support.
NAN reports that the theme of 2014 edition of the celebration is ‘Communication at the Service of an Authentic Culture of Encounter’.
“What is happening in the country is not palatable, especially among the comity of nations.
“As media practitioners, we have our role to play by putting social responsibility above sentiments,” Mimiko said.
He cautioned journalists against reporting sensitive issues that could lead to breach of security and endanger the peace and serenity of the society.
Speaking earlier, the Most Rev. Bishop Jude Arogundade of Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral, Akure, said that it was disheartening to hear stories of loss of lives and properties daily.
“It is shameful now that Nigeria is tagged terrorist state because of daily killings of people and loss of properties.
” We no longer value lives,” the Bishop said.
He called for joint efforts by all to face the security challenges, pointing out that government alone could not effectively tackle the situation without popular participation.
