The Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal has described as unfortunate the rating of Nigeria among the least transformed countries in Africa, saying the country has no business to be among such nations of Africa.
Tambuwal made this known while delivering a keynote address at the 8th annual Business Law Conference which was organised by Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Lagos. The Speaker, who was represented by Moyo Onigbanjo (SAN) spoke on theme: Exemplary Governance: Enhancing Economic Development in Nigeria.
According to Tambuwal: "Only recently the African Transformation Report as at 2010, presented by the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACEF) in Kigali, Rwanda, listed Nigeria among the countries with the least economic transformation in the Sub-Sahara region.
"The African Transformation Index (ATI) which was premised on Diversification, export competitiveness and technology upgrading, had Mauritius coming top with 73 points while Nigeria placed a distance 19th with 15 points in the least category below the top and medium categories.
"Some of the countries in the top category include South Africa, Cote D'Ivoire, Uganda, Kenya, among others. In the medium category were Cameroon,  Botswana, Tanzania. And others while in the least category are Benin, Ghana, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Burundi and Burkina Faso. We are not there alone but, for God's sake, we have no business being there in the first place," Tambuwal said.
In his remark, the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said the power to have good governance reside with Nigerians but lamented that voter apathy has kept denying the opportunity of making a change for good government.
